Peter Anthony Perry Early Life and Roots

Peter Perry exemplifies that the funeral industry is far from a stagnant business. As the CEO of Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd., I have had the honor of providing final care services for some of Jamaica’s most cherished icons, extending compassion and support to numerous families. Growing up in the modest community of Brown’s Hall, St. Catherine West Central, my early years were simple yet profoundly influential. This community has also given birth to notable figures, such as former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and current Cabinet Minister Clifford Everald Warmington.

Early Fascinations and Career Beginnings

From a young age, I was drawn to the deceased, a unique interest that distinguished me within my community. After completing my primary education at Brown’s Hall and secondary schooling at Tacius Golding Secondary, I relocated to Kingston at 17 in pursuit of better opportunities. My first job involved scrubbing pots and pans at the National Water Commission’s canteen on Marescaux Road. Over the years, I undertook various roles, from handyman and taxi driver to security officer at East Ocean Textile in the Kingston Free Zone. Despite these jobs, my true passions remained unfulfilled.

Dual Passions: Policing and Funeral Services

I have always been driven by two primary passions: becoming a police officer and a funeral director. In 1999, I joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force, serving as a district constable for now 25 years. However, my desire to work in the funeral industry was equally strong and perhaps stronger. I attended every funeral I could, motivated by a need to ensure the deceased looked their best. This passion led me to pursue funeral directing earnestly, and in October 2006, I handled my first body, a young lady named Tanisha Henry. Her mother’s trust in me confirmed my path in this business.

Founding Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd.

I established Perry’s Funeral Arrangements & Supplies Ltd. in a modest space at 180 Brunswick Avenue in Spanish Town. Despite the humble beginnings, the company quickly earned a reputation for compassionate, high-quality service. A significant turning point came when I had the chance to purchase a new location at 27 Job Lane, Spanish Town. With the support of a stranger who believed in me, affording me the time to pay for the parcel of land that is now home to Perry’s Funeral Home, I expanded Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd. into its current state-of-the-art facility.

Serving Jamaican Icons

Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd. has been entrusted with the final arrangements for music legends such as Frederick Hibbert (Toots), U Roy (Ewart Beckford), and Bunny Wailer (Neville Livingston). Pioneer record producer and composer Lee “Scratch” Perry, Denroy Morgan, Jamaican-born American reggae artist and patriarch of Morgan Heritage, Toots, celebrated for his contributions to ska and rocksteady, was laid to rest in National Heroes Park. U Roy, a pioneer of deejay-style reggae, and Bunny Wailer, the last prominent member of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, and Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson of the Mighty Diamonds were also under our care. These high-profile funerals demonstrated our commitment to excellence and compassionate service.

The Heart of Perry’s: Compassion and Empathy

What distinguishes Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd. is our unwavering dedication to empathy. I strive to create a peaceful, comforting experience for grieving families. Our meticulous attention to detail ensures that loved ones appear serene, as if merely sleeping. This approach profoundly impacts those mourning, often bringing them solace. My hands-on involvement, from driving the hearse to preparing bodies, underscores my commitment to maintaining the highest standards.

Expansion and Innovation

Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd. continues to expand, with recent developments including a new chapel, increased parking, a two-bedroom suite for visitors, a private sports bar, clothing store, and more. Despite our growth, I remain dedicated to preserving the quality of our services. I believe in focusing on one location to ensure consistent, high-quality care, resisting the urge to expand at the expense of our standards.

Philanthropy and Community Engagement

Generosity and kindness are integral to who I am. I believe in making a positive impact daily, whether by paying for strangers’ groceries or offering support to those in need. Contributing to my old school Brown’s Hall is part of my commitment to giving back, reflected in the countless acts of kindness I perform, often without expecting anything in return. This philosophy extends to my work at Perry’s, where I strive to make a difference in the lives of others every day.

Personal Life and Passions

Beyond my professional life, I am a devoted family man and a music enthusiast. I own and operate the top-notch sound system, Perry’s International, and enjoy hosting events.

Conclusion

My journey from a small-town boy with a fascination for the deceased to the CEO of Perry’s Funeral Home Ltd. is one of passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment. I am grateful for the trust and support of my community and look forward to continuing to serve with compassion and excellence. Through Perry’s, I aim to honor the lives of the departed and provide solace to the living, ensuring that our legacy of care and empathy endures.
